Art Deco, or the 'modernistic style',  borrowed from many styles of the past, incorporating these style elements into modern building requirements and using them to add theme to a building or embellishments which added visual quality to an otherwise box-like design.

Or, in some cases, taking older ways of using design elements and using a more 'modern' element instead such as a gear or screw head
