The term 'Art Deco'  refers to the use of  a variety of older styles in a more 'modern building design and was popular in the 1920's and 1930's.

It was influential to design generally during that period and design today is still influenced by its' use of past design elements added to a modern modern application and design

Art Deco happened around the time of Cubism and Futurism and shared the overall enthusiasm for industrial change
